IPv6 Day

Google, Facebook, Yahoo! and a host of other organizations world wide will be doing a 24 hour test on June 8th of  IPv6. This is sponsored by the Internet Society and is intended to prepare for the adoption of a new Internet Protocol. This is in response to address exhaustion of the IPv4 addresses and the continued growth of the open internet.

You probably won’t even notice the test, 99.95% of people will have no problem accessing services. Either they will connect over the IPv6 or their system will fall back to IPv4. There’s always a possibility that systems will fail, if you find participating websites running slowly or unresponsive this may be due to misconfigured or misbehaving home networking equipment. Routers and other home equipment can make a computer think it has IPv6 connectivity when in fact it’s not working.

If you would like to read more about it and see which organizations are participating check out the Internet Society’s  World IPv6 day page.

Bye-Bye IE6

Have you seen the Internet Explorer 6 extinction countdown? 10 years after it was introduced less than 12% of the world is using Internet Explorer 6. The old version no longer supports current web standards and requires a more complex code to maintain compatible sites.

If you have a website, Microsoft is encouraging you to put a banner on it to encourage people to upgrade to a newer browser.  If you’re like me you didn’t think much about it. But with the changes over the years it’s not going to be long before IE6 is history, and there won’t be sites left that run on it.

Are you still supporting the IE6 browser on your site?

Facebook, Skype and Online Messaging

Last year I posted about the announcement of Facebook’s email “Messages” and how it could potentially impact gmail and other web based email providers. However, since then Facebook has stated that “Messages” is not an email service, they are “focusing on creating a simpler, faster experience.” They don’t see gmail, Yahoo!, and Windows Live as competitors. People are using email less and utilizing other means more, real-time communication is the way most users are leaning.

Facebook wanted to try to corner the market of real-time communication with the purchase of Skype, the VOIP and video chat provider that has a reported 663 million users. Facebook was beaten out by Microsoft who has reportedly acquired Skype for $8.5 billion.

What does this development mean for Facebook and Google? Well it’s bad for Google. Google is trying to corner the communications market, and while a Facebook/Skype merge was going to be a huge blow, the Microsoft news isn’t much better. Microsoft is an investor in Facebook, because of this Facebook may get access to Skype courtesy of Microsoft. This would give Facebook comparable offering as Google who is already offering VOIP and video chat. As this deal closes (it’s still pending regulatory approval) this development could put Google in a pickle and make Facebook a force to be reckoned with.

Acronyms Added to the Dictionary

Our texting jargon has been added to the dictionary. The stalwart bastion of language, the Oxford English Dictionary, will now include ♥ and LOL as real words worthy of etymological recording.  The Huffington Post talks about the decision to add the “words” in this article.
